Initial Thinking
When considering an at-home vision test, we identified a more critical issue—detecting amblyopia (lazy eye) in children at an early stage. This led us to explore the development of an app that simplifies vision screening for parents and caregivers.
Potential Target Users
Parents concerned about their child’s vision
Adults who need to monitor vision changes for driving, work, or daily life
Individuals who wear corrective lenses and require regular checkups
Research Methods
Competitive analysis
User interviews
Competitive Analysis
Several apps are currently available that focus on eye health and vision enhancement. Key competitors include Eye Testing | Eye Care App, LooC, and Eye Exercises and Vision Test. These apps provide users with tools to assess their vision, perform eye exercises, and track progress, offering solutions to improve overall eye care and well-being.
User interviews
User interviews with a diverse range of participants, regardless of whether they used vision correction, to understand different perspectives on eye health and vision monitoring
Findings
The early detection of vision issues, especially in children, is difficult with standard tests.
Many users are more concerned about overall eye health rather than just checking their vision.
Eye health is often overlooked compared to general physical health.
There is a lack of awareness about effective eye care methods.
Increased screen time has heightened concerns about eye strain and long-term vision health.
Problem
Despite the growing need for eye care solutions, many people lack accessible tools to track and maintain their vision health. Traditional eye exams require clinic visits, and there is limited awareness of preventive eye care practices. Additionally, users seek a convenient way to monitor vision changes and manage eyewear updates without frequent doctor visits.
Solutions
Daily Eye Health Hub
A daily check-in system that encourages users to monitor their eye condition, making eye health awareness a habit. Personalized recommendations, wellness tips, and lifestyle tracking support proactive vision care.
Eye Exercises
Guided activities designed to alleviate eye strain, improve focus, and promote relaxation. Exercises are tailored based on user-reported symptoms and daily habits, making them easy to integrate into routines.
Vision Tests
At-home interactive tests for visual acuity and astigmatism with intuitive step-by-step guidance. Results are visually compared to past records, helping users understand changes and determine if a clinic visit is necessary.
Vision History Tracker
A centralized system for logging vision test results, prescriptions, and eyewear details. Users receive notifications when it’s time to update their eyewear or seek professional consultation.
Persona
Developed detailed user personas based on research insights, representing different demographics, vision conditions, and digital habits to guide design decisions.
User Flow
By organizing user journeys and information architecture for each feature, we created an intuitive flow that seamlessly connects functionalities, ensuring a smooth user experience. Additionally, to complete the implementation within a limited timeframe, we shared the feature designs with the development team at an early stage.
Wireframe
As our design team consists of four designers, to ensure design consistency, we created low-fidelity wireframes to prototype core functionalities and validate the structure before moving on to detailed mockups.
User Test
Conducted usability testing with individuals across various vision conditions, gathering feedback on navigation clarity, test accuracy, and overall engagement.
Hi-Fidelity
Translated wireframes into visually polished screens, ensuring a clean and modern aesthetic with accessibility in mind.
Design System
Established a scalable design system with consistent typography, color schemes, and UI patterns to maintain coherence across the app.
UI Kits & Components
Created a comprehensive UI kit, including buttons, form elements, modals, and interactive components.
Standardized reusable components to maintain design consistency across all features.
Takeaways
If I had more time…
Deeper User Testing: Conduct more extensive usability testing across different demographics, including children and elderly users, to refine interactions and accessibility further.
Advanced Vision Analysis: Explore AI-driven vision analysis to provide more personalized insights based on users' test results.
Enhanced Gamification: Implement engaging incentives like streak tracking or rewards to encourage consistent eye health monitoring.
Integration with Eye Clinics: Develop features for users to share their vision records directly with eye care professionals for better long-term tracking.
Eyewear Shopping & Doctor Appointments: Enable users to purchase eyewear based on their prescriptions and conveniently book appointments with eye doctors within the app.
